Blog Tour Review and GIVEAWAY: The Guardians- T.M. Franklin

About MORE
Ava Michaels used to think she was special.

As a child, she fantasized about having magical powers . . . making things happen. But Ava grew up and eventually accepted the fact that her childish dreams were just that, and maybe a normal life wasn't so bad after all.

Now a young college student, Ava meets Caleb Foster, a brilliant and mysterious man who’s supposed to help her pass physics, but in reality has another mission in mind. What he shows Ava challenges her view of the world, shaking it to its very core.

Because Caleb isn't quite what he seems. In fact, he's not entirely human, and he's not the only one.

Together, the duo faces a threat from an ancient race bound to protect humans, but only after protecting their own secrets—secrets they fear Ava may expose. Fighting to survive, Ava soon learns she's not actually normal . . . she's not even just special.

She's a little bit more.

MORE Book Trailer

About The Guardians: Book Two in the MORE Trilogy
Coming November 7, 2013
Ava’s life is . . . complicated.
After all, it’s not every day a girl learns she’s not entirely human, or unlocks hidden powers strong enough to make even the First Race sit up and take notice. After surviving an attempted kidnapping and standing up to the Race’s Ruling Council, Ava Michaels returns to college and what she hopes is a normal life. But Ava quickly realizes that for her, normal may not even exist anymore.
In fact, the Council wants her under their control, and they’re not the only ones. The mysterious Rogues have a plan of their own, and it turns out Ava’s a big part of it, whether she wants to be or not.
On top of that, her new relationship is tested in ways she never expected. Her boyfriend, Caleb Foster, has disappeared—accused of betraying the Race—and Ava herself stands implicated in a crime she didn’t commit.
Clearing their names will mean uncovering a web of deceit and intrigue with Ava woven right in the center. To unravel the strands, she joins forces with some unlikely allies; a Protector who once haunted her nightmares, a young girl with secrets as unexpected as Ava’s, and a group of rebel Guardians who have their own fight against the Council.
Together they stand in a battle to find the truth, bring Caleb home, and secure Ava’s freedom—not to mention save her life.

Review: I received this book free from Netgalley in exchange for n honest review.
I really enjoyed the first book in this series MORE, so I was elated when I found out I had been approved by netgalley to read and review The Guardians. This novel was a fairly quick read and it was easy to get through despite the author throwing a ton of information at the reader. I loved getting all of that background info and it cleared up some of the rather large mysteries surrounding Ava's life. But at the same time T.M. Franklin brought up even more questions which I hope will be answered in the next instalment.
I'm very glad the Ava was coming into her own abilities finally and even more when the block came down. I am curious to see if that will affect Ava in a positive or negative way. I just love how you can feel the love radiating between Ava and Caleb. I also now feel like Katherine and Tiernan were misunderstood in book one and in this novel I actually enjoyed them as characters and liked hearing about their lives. What can I say about Caleb without giving away any spoilers lol. He had me believing new possibilities on who were good and bad.
Another fascinating read by T.M. Franklin and I can't wait to read more from her. I would recommend this to sci fi/ paranormal readers.

Author Bio:

T.M. Franklin started out her career writing non-fiction in a television newsroom. Graduating with a B.A. in Communications specializing in broadcast journalism and production, she worked for nine years as a major market television news producer, and garnered two regional Emmy Awards, before she resigned to be a full-time mom and part-time freelance writer. After writing and unsuccessfully querying a novel that she now admits, “is not that great,” she decided to follow the advice of one of the agents who turned her down—write some more and get better at it. Her first published novel, MORE, was born during National Novel Writing month, a challenge to write a novel in thirty days.

She lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband, Mike, is mom to two boys, Justin and Ryan, and has an enormous black dog named Rocky who’s always lying nearby while she’s writing. Whether he’s soothed by the clicking of the computer keys or just waiting for someone to rub his belly is up for debate.

In addition to MORE and The Guardians, Franklin penned the Amazon best-selling short story, Window, as well as another short story, A Piece of Cake, which appears in the Romantic Interludes anthology.

Review #184: Capital Girls- Ella Monroe

Summary: CAPITAL GIRLS by Ella Monroe is the first book in a glitzy, fast-paced, fabulous new young adult series set against the backdrop of Washington, D.C. In it, we meet four young women, best friends forever, who must navigate life as the children of some of the most powerful people in the nation. With that life comes not only awesome vacations, beautiful clothes and A-list parties, but also scandal, heartache, danger and the ever-present paparazzi who seem to have a knack for catching them when they're up to something bad!

Review: I received this book free from Goodreads First Reads in exchange for an honest review.
I love this book cover! It's so colourful and fun. I also really enjoyed the premise of the book and it drew me in right from the get go. I liked how the author incorporated the multiple POV's and also the flashbacks into the story. I got through this novel in a matter of hours and when I was finished I needed more so I went on line and bought book two and three so I can continue the series. Hopefully that happens sooner rather than later lol. Plus the story ended right at a juicy part.
I liked the three main characters and how their lives and how their lives revolved around their dead friend. Everything they did in their lives went back to "What would TAylor think or what would TAylor do?" I must say that I disliked LauraBeth the least, even before anything happened, I just feel like she is super fake. Lettie was the most real character because she wasn't rich and she had to work for everything she had so she didn't just piss it away or not care. I did feel for her because I don't imagine it was easy to always be trying to fit in with her friends and live up to everyone's standards. Jackie was okay, I didn't agree with some of her actions but who knows what will happen now. Whitney is the girl you love to hate. I love her because she creates drama but I hate her because she creates drama, if that makes any sense. Plus I feel like she is being treated both fair and unfairly.
Like I said previously, I will be continuing on with this series sometime hopefully in the near future. I find it a really quick and fun read and I can't wait to see what happens after that bomb was dropped. I would recommend this to those looking for an easy to read contemporary with lots of drama.

Review #183: Lightpoints- Peter Kassen

Summary: What if you suddenly discovered you had a sense-and powers-that almost no one else in the world did? When Amanda Lindner Nichols, a 24-year-old graphic artist living with her husband in Queens, New York, is revived from a near-death experience, she discovers she perceives everyone around her as points of light-but not with her eyes. She soon learns she can not only perceive the life energy of others, but she can give and take it. With the help of others like her, she brings her husband Chris to the brink of death and back to bestow on him the same remarkable faculty, and they're the happiest they've been. But not for long. All over the world, people who've been revived from their own near-death experience at just the right moment discover themselves with these same unusual powers. They find ways to use them-some for good and some for evil. When Amanda and Chris encounter a ruthless group of gangsters with the same faculty, tragedy follows-and Amanda faces the greatest challenge of her life.

Review: I received the book free from the author in exchange for an honest review.
I thought that the idea of this book was really cool dealing with NDE's (near death experiences) and OBE's (out of body experiences), but the story fell a little flat for me. This was a quick read but it wasn't as interesting or detailed as i would have liked. The varying POV's sometimes confused me, especially when the character would have their own chapter and then we never hear about them again. Also the ending was way to opened ended, will there be another book? Or is this the end?
Amanda was my favourite character just because she was a genuine person and didn't let her power go to her head. Hopefully what happened at the end of the book will be the last of her using hers gift against others. Chris was weird to me, I didn't feel any love coming from him for Amanda and I found him to be selfish. I also would have liked more information on Lisa, she is quite the mystery.
This was an okay book. I'm not sure if I would read another from this author. I don't really know how to describe this novel, paranormal or contemporary with a hint of paranormal haha. Like really.... Who is to say that this isn't true???

Review #182: Persephone- Lavender Youko

Summary: Stockholm Syndrome. A psychological condition that causes a person to feel understanding, even affection, towards their captor or abuser. It's deadly in the sense that the person feeling the symptoms will not perceive it in the slightest. It has caused hostages to hold guns to their heads and pull the trigger as a test of their faith without being told that the gun is completely unloaded.

Equally deadly in the same fashion is Lima Syndrome, which is the identical yet opposite mental state where the one in the act of imprisoning begins to sympathize with the very person they are holding prisoner. It goes deeper than merely feeling sorry for them – it can even turn into emotions of love and compassion, even though they are the ones causing the trauma.

I don't know what my name is anymore. But he called me Persephone.

Review: I received this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Firstly I just want to say that this book tricked me because I thought it was going to be about Greek mythology but I was wrong. Although I did enjoy the similarities between the two. I do wish that there would have been two POV's because I would have loved to get inside August's head and have gotten even more background information on him. This book drew me in right from the beginning and held my attention until the very end. It was a quick read and I got through it in good time but I wish there would have been more of an ending. I want to know where everyone ended up.
*SPOILER ALERT*
At the start I was mad at Persephone for not fighting back against August, but then he began to grow on me. And this may sound rude but her life was way better with him anyways, I don't want to downplay the whole crazy situation but she had chances to leave and she didn't. She was happier with him. And I don't believe that she had Munchausen's either, she knew what happened wasn't right but her love outweighed the bad feelings. I also kind of grew to like Marcel, I'm glad that he was there to support Elaine during her time of need.
Overall this was a great read and I want more of these characters and their stories. I would recommend this story to those who enjoy romantic, suspense stories. I can't wait to read my by this author.

Review #181- The Old Arbutus Tree- Leigh Matthews

Summary: Stuck in a small town in Alberta, Rose misses her father and watches in horror as a local widower wins over both her mother and sister. She finds solace in a fellow nerd, Jason, but when her sister, Sara, is violently assaulted Rose must decide whether to stick to the town's story or find the strength to help a friend.

Exploring the vulnerability of difference in a closed community, The Old Arbutus Tree is a story of discovery, empathy and learning how and who to trust. It lays bare the common confusion of adolescent sexual identity and the devastating effects of a small town's prejudice. When power, privilege and access conspire against justice, Rose and Jason are forced to see how desire is policed by our peers, our town, and the wider judicial and medical establishments. Can they help each other recognise real love, in whatever form it comes, and give themselves permission to accept it?

Detailing the events leading up to an unknown gunman opening fire in the town of Pitcher Creek, The Old Arbutus Tree forces us to consider how violence begets violence and how we can break free of this cycle. Is sexual difference really something to fear? How did government-sanctioned institutions in 1980s Canada fail young men as they discovered love for the first time, with each other? Does tragedy need to hit a whole community, not just a single family, before someone speaks up for those without a voice?

Review: I received this book from Goodreads First Reads in exchange for an honest review.
This might sounds bad, but I only entered to win this book because it takes place in Alberta where I am from. I did really enjoy this story, it's about love, loss and everything in between. I also liked that it dealt with darker issues. You don't get too many books that deal with death, rape and suicide all wrapped into one read, but this one had them all and I loved it. I like how the author kind of gave hints as to what would be happening next without coming right out and telling you. I also enjoyed the different POV's and the journal entires.
I love how easy it was to connect to the main character Rose. She had always lived in her "perfect", older sisters shadow. I didn't like how they were just over a year apart but Rose was treated like a baby regardless. I also found her to be a bit naive and a coward. If I had been in her shoes I would have made sure the right person had been punished for the said crimes. I was very disappointed in Sara, Rose's sister for not telling the truth and letting the charade go on as long as it had. I also felt bad for poor Jason, he didn't deserve that but at least he met someone.
What I really need to know is if there is a book two. I feel like the book was left off to go either way, to be a standalone or merge into a series. I look forward to more books by Leigh Matthews. I would recommend this novel to those who enjoy contemporaries on the darker side.

Blurb:

Abigail Orson has a problem. A love problem to be precise; and she has absolutely no idea how to go about fixing it.
For years now, she has been chasing her best friend’s brother—demanding things from him that he’s never wanted to give. For one? A real relationship that surpasses well beyond that dreaded ‘just friends’ zone. You see, David Anderson is her idea of perfection to a T. The one and only guy who has ever had the ability to make her heart beat faster; make her toes curl with the simple blink of his long, girly lashes. But David is also a recovering amputee, and the only thing he really wants from Abigail is to be left alone. Abigail is a fighter though, and losing the one guy who has ruined her for every other is no longer an option.
A guy with one leg who has lost his motivation to live—to love—to actually be a man. David believes he’s a waste of space. If only the beautiful girl of his unattainable dreams would get that through her perfect, blonde, stubborn head! He’s not the right guy for Abigail. He’ll never be worthy of what she deserves. However, staying away is almost impossible, especially when he’s just as in love with her as she is with him. But Abigail has a life ahead of her, one that’s definitely livable without a nineteen–year–old gimp like him holding her down. What makes her want to stick around is beyond questionable to David’s mind.
Choices will be made. Lines will be drawn. And together, they will face challenges that nobody saw coming. David and Abigail may have had almost fourteen years to fall in love, but the thing is, timing and love have never exactly worked in their favor.
It has been years in the making, and definitely A Long Time Coming for David and Abigail. Let’s hope they don’t screw it up before they actually have the chance to get it right…

Excerpt:
She spun around, nibbling on her lip, grabbing both of his hands as she pulled him slowly along with her. Her eyes were so focused and shiny that he barely remembered his own name, let alone what he was about to say.
“No crutches, David.”
They made it to the edge of the floor, just as the tempo of the music slowed, to that of a seductive, rhythmic beat. She pulled his hands towards her, and he took that non–verbal command, wrapping his arms around her waist. His fingers knew just what to do, settling into the curves of her body right above her perfect ass. Those damn traitorous body parts had a mind of their own.
“I won’t let you fall…” she whispered in his ear, running her fingers through the back of his hair like a vixen who he wanted to steal away forever, only, though, so he could lock her up with him in the backseat of her car again.
Shit …it wasn’t the fear of falling that worried him. Oh no…it was the fear of never wanting to let her go again.

Review: I received this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review.
I wasn't really sure what to expect from this book but I did think that that summary sounded interesting. Dead dreams was definitely interesting lol. This was an extremely quick read, almost too quick. I felt like it was cut short. The reader is left on a cliffhanger with a lot of unanswered questions. I liked and hated the mystery all at the same time because I hated not knowing what was going on. I will absolutely be reading the next book for that exact reason.
At the beginning of the story I found Brie to be a strong and independent woman until Sarah showed up. I found that Sarah drained Brie's confidence and always talked down to her. She took advantage of Brie being naive. I didn't like Sarah from the start, I could tell she wasn't being honest and was hiding something. As the story started to unravel we learned a bit about each of them but I need way more. I can't wait to find out how everything is connected and what happened to the missing characters.
This was a really great mystery read but I was left wanting a lot more and I hope that the next book has it. I'm excited to hear the real story about Sarah. I would recommend this book to those who love a good mystery read, but I would warn them to have book two handy.

Escape to The UnKnown

Expert:

We walked inside the restaurant of the very small Angelo’s. It was busy because it was a Saturday night. The walls were painted a very dark red and each table was outfitted with a matching red table cloth with a lit candle sitting on top of it.

“Very romantic, Mr. Mitchell.”

“I try my best, Miss Scott.” The waitress walked over and took us to a very small, quiet booth in the back of the restaurant. When we reached it there were a dozen white roses sitting there. I was confused, had he planned this?

“Drake, you have already given me flowers. This is too much.”

“I can never give you enough. I want to give you the world. Do you know what the white rose signifies?” He pulled me down into the booth with him.

“I don’t, but they are just as beautiful as the red ones you gave me.”

“The white rose signifies purity and innocence. The red rose signifies love, beauty, courage, and respect. And together they signify unity. Baby, you are those things to me. You are my heart.” He kissed the back of my hand. “You are as pure as the driven snow.” He kissed it again. “And you are as beautiful as an angel descending from heaven.” Drake’s eyes danced with hope and love. I could see that he truly loved me. Where did this man come from? Tears were beginning to form in my eyes.

“And together,” he pulled out a single white rose and a single red one and laced the stems together. “We are strong. We can’t be broken.” By the time he finished I was a blubbering fool. I was so happy in that exact moment.
“I love you with all my heart,” he whispered lovingly.  I closed my eyes and savored his every word. I hadn’t ever known love like this. I never wanted to let it go.
“Baby, you ok?”

“Yes. I love you so much. I can’t believe you did this. My makeup is probably running.” I wiped the tears from my eyes. Who knows what I look like right now, but I couldn’t help it. This was just all too wonderful not to cry.

Review #180: Rest Inn Peace- Bonnie Bernard

Summary:  Welcome to Rest Inn Peace -where life begins at the end of the road and murder is sometimes funny.

Cobra Carpenter has trouble with substance abuse, staying out of jail, and seeing things that aren’t really there. A big city boy, he’s been released from prison (again) just in time to inherit his dead grandmother’s inn on the outskirts of Yellowstone National Park. He has also just been granted full custody of his twelve year old kid, Zoe, whose only non-imaginary friend is a kleptomaniac hypochondriac who lives in fear of rabies and bacon.
Zoe inherited Cobra’s flair for seeing things that aren’t really there, and he is none too happy about it. To complicate matters, the inn’s manager, Regina Oxford, insists those imaginary things that aren’t really there…are really there; every dragon, fairy, zombie, talking animal, ghost, and even the creepy winking statue. This includes the imaginary creatures that live at Rest Inn Peace, and the ones who rent rooms by the night. Cobra hates the crazy inn and plans an escape. But where will he and Zoe go? The world outside is crumbling; people are hungry and desperate. Here in rural Broken Spur Valley, food is plentiful, water is fresh, and life is good. Well, it’s mostly good. There are, of course, those pesky murders in town…that started the day Cobra and Zoe moved in.

Pull off your shoes and traipse through a land of fairies, dragons, trolls, and an assortment of misfit humans. Rest Inn Peace is a charming bed and breakfast nestled in a magical grove, next to a cemetery packed with brain-starved zombies.

Oh, and a word to the wise; beware of cross-eyed flying lizards with an addiction to eggplant and cauliflower.

Review: Rest Inn Peace was week 5's book in our book group. I really liked the premise if this book because I enjoy paranormal books that contain more than one paranormal creature and this book just about had them all. I also enjoyed thoe whole murder mystery but something about the story didn't jive with me. I'm not sure if I liked it jumping between the different characters either. I did like how it was kind of for all ages if it didn't have the swears lol. But I think that both adults and kids would get a kick out if the story. I found it interesting how I was kept guessing who the bad guy was and when I found out it was someone I would have never guessed in a million years.
Zoe was an awesome character. She had a rough life for such a young child but I liked how it left her very sarcastic. I'm glad she got to let lose and be herself at the Inn. At first I didn't really like Cobra but he grew on me. I think he has a lot of potential as a character and he needs to work on being a father. Reggie was great, I just felt bad that she didn't get to experience every much in her life, but hopefully that will change. Faest was my absolute favourite character. I WANT HIM!!
This was an entertaining read. I liked how the author could have you laughing one second and crying the next. I would read more books by Bonnie Bernard to see if her writing style is the same in every book or if this was a one time thing. I would recommend this book to paranormal lovers.

Blog Tour, Review and GIVEAWAY: Fight or Flight Book 1 & 2- Jamie Canosa

Summary: Be smart.
Keep your head down.
And look out for number one.

These are the rules Jay has lived by for the past two years. The rules of surviving life on the streets. But when Em comes bursting into his life, in all of her disastrous glory, the rules go right out the window.

Survive.
Flee what’s been left behind.
And never look back.

Emerson’s plan was simple. Though, it was easier said than done. The city streets are dangerous and unforgiving to a new arrival. Especially, a seventeen-year-old girl who’s never known anything but life in the suburbs. Sometimes, however, what’s lurking behind those white picket fences can be more frightening than any dark alley.

Both of them made the same decision when life got overwhelming—to run from their demons. Brought together by fate or circumstance, Em and Jay find the kind of love neither of them ever expected. But, when those demons come back to haunt them and their love is on the line, which instincts will they choose to follow this time . . . Fight or Flight?

Review: I received this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review.
OMG!! I love this cover! And the book was amazing! This book has approximately 350 pages and I flew through it in a few hours, I literally could not put it down until it was finished. This book is both sad and beautiful at the same time. It talks about a lot of real life situations that were sometimes hard to hear but made me realize what some people have to deal with on a daily basis in order to survive. The story is also cute and heartwarming in a weird way. The ending made me very happy and I can't wait to read the next book.
I love Emerson. She is so brave to have survived what she went through and have escaped even though she knew she would have to live on the streets. She may have been inexperienced in that environment but like she said she would rather die on the streets then at home. I also fell in love with Jay. He didn't have to help Em but he knew she wouldn't survive without him. I really think that they complimented each other perfectly and I'm so glad that they found one another. Despite the circumstance. I also really liked Sam. It's nice to see that there are still good people in the world.
I LOVED THIS BOOK! I can't wait to get started on book two. Jamie Canosa is an author to watch out for. I need to find out if Em and Jay finally get their happily ever after. I would recommend this novel to EVERYONE!!!

Summary:  To move on,
 Leave the past behind,
And build a new life with Jay.

That’s all Em wanted. After everything they’d been through together, they were both overdue their ‘happily ever after’. Too bad the world doesn’t work that way. Memories last longer than dreams and Em’sfears continue to plague her both day and night, interfering with that new life she so desperately craves.

To start over,
Secure a future,
And give Em the life she deserves.

That was Jay’s plan, but the past isn’t done with them, yet. While Em still struggles to overcome the ghosts of her past, Jay is forced to come face to face with his. When the skeletons in his closet step back into the light, Jay must decide what he will do—and what he will sacrifice—to protect Em from them.

Against all odds, Em and Jay are on the verge of having everything they’ve ever wanted. They’ve fought for it before, but is their love strong enough to endure any more heartache? The time has come for each of them to choose for themselves whether or not they will allow the past to continue to corrupt their future. And, together, they must decide, will it be . . . NOW OR NEVER?

Review: I received this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review.
I enjoyed this book, it was gripping and easy to devour but I didn't enjoy it as much as Fight or Flight because I didn't find the situations as intense. I wanted more of Jay's story, I didn't really get where his dad came from and how he found them and I don't really know what he actually wanted, well besides money. I am glad the story ended the way it did because Jay and Em finally got to be happy. But I still want more! I want, no I NEED to know what happens now. Do the villains finally go to jail? And if yes do they stay there. And do Jay and Em get their happy ending forever?
I'm still in love withe Jay and Em but it I am sad that they keep blaming themselves for hints that they have no control over. I'm glad that they are getting their lives together and coming into their own. I love that they are able to grow and overcome their issues together and have each other for support. I also really like amazon and Ashlyn and I can't wait to get their stories.
This was another awesome book by Jamie Canosa and I can't wait to read more. This story tugged on my heart strings and I want more! I would recommend this novel to those who love a good romantic contemporary.
