Review #60: Afterlife- S. P. Cloward

Title: Afterlife
Author: S. P. Cloward
Pages: 236
Rating: 4/5 Stars
Review: I received this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review.

At first when I read the summary, I figured that his would be your typical zombie Apocolypse book, it wasn't. It was a fresh idea on the whole take on the undead. This novel was zombie, sci-fi at its best. The authors descriptions of the characters surroundings made you feel like you were right there with them. There was quite a bit of action going on thought the book with the minutest amount of romance possible.
The characters were really interesting to learn about, I just wished that we could have learned more about Jez and Emily in the past lives. I found Wes to be a great main character. He was strong and took the lead even though he was new to the undead world. Also he was the "good guy" but doesn't play it up, he was very humble about being the hero. Then there was Seth, the evil villian who was bad to the core. You could feel the evil radiating off of him. I can't wait to hear his story. Also I want to find out what is up with "The Body", who are they or what are they.
This is a great read for anyone who likes zombies/ undead books or sci-fi paranormal, or all of the above. It was an interesting read and I think anyone who reads it will love it. I'm surprised that it hasn't been more well known. Plus I can't wait for the next book, and to learn more about where the story is going and who is going along for the ride.

Review #59: Zen Gem- Tom Wright

Title: Zen Gem
Author: Tom Wright
Pages: 230
Rating: 2/5 Stars
Review: I recieved this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I feel that this summary is misleading. To me, it sounds like this book will be about two kids and their stories of hunting for gems. Well that is not the case at all. This book is about the father's stories of gem hunting and the children are maybe mention 4-5 times though out the book. The was not a book for me. After the first 2-3 pages I realized just that and wa demoted to give up. But I pushed myself (very hard) and finished it, with a bit of skimming on my part. This story is written in a journal format. I must say that the book is filled with a ton of information on gems which I retained a little. But at the same time the story sounds like it was narrated by my grade 11 social teacher and I found it hard to stay awake to read it. Even when the main character was clinging to a cliff for dear life I was yawning. Yes I realize there are underlying messages and they are good ones such as don't take anytime that you spend with your family for granted and your children are the real gems, blah, blah, blah.
On the bright side, I found the author to be very intelligent and was very good at giving descriptions to the reader. This saved the book for me.
I really feel like the summary needs to be changed to reflect what the book is really about. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes gems or gem hunting and maybe readers who are big into underlying messages. Don't get me wrong, the book wasn't bad, it just wasn't my cup of tea. Thanks.

Review #58: Haunted- Willow Cross

Title: Haunted
Author: Willow Cross
Pages: 26
Rating: 5/5 Stars
Review: I received this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review.
This book of short stories sucked me in from the very beginning. The books follows Willow through her life and shares her experiences with ghosts. Which I might add is definitely an above average number of encounters. I felt that this book really hit close to home because I also believe in ghosts and have had my fair share of encounters with them. Although, unlike Willow my experiences haven't been that scary. I also feel that ghost stories are the creepiest of the paranormal genre for that fact that they are real.
This book was a fast- paced read that keeps that reader clinging to the edge of their chair with their heart pounding. I glad that Willow experienced good spirits and not just the scary ones. If I were Willow I wou ls definitely be doing some ghostly research. Thanks Willow for sharing your experiences!

About this author

Willow Cross resides in Arkansas with her husband, two children still young enough to live at home, an enormous cat named Bitsy, and a scaredy-cat dog named Tank. Her home has been known to host the occasional ghost, and a few of her friends profess to be witches. Although she dearly loves Vampires and Werewolves, they are never invited for dinner.

Review #57: Harvest Moon- K. B. Miller

Title: Harvest Moon
Author: K. B. Miller
Series: Moon Coven
Rating: 5/5 Stars
Review: I received this books free from the authior in exchange for an honest review.
This is the third book by the amazing K. B. Miller that I have has the privileged of reading. This particular book is number 1.5 in the Moon Coven series. This is an in- between novella.
In this short story we learn about Lochlan Moon; Lily's father, when he was a young boy. We are shown how Lily's parents meet and also about what lead Lochlan and his siblings to revoke their witch powers.
This was one of the best in- betweens that I have read. There was so much background story present that we get to learn about, which makes a lot of things from the main book Compulsion start to make a lot of peoples reasoning make sense.
I would definitely recommend this story to all of K. B.'s avid fans and anyone who loves a great paranormal read . Thanks again K. B. for the continually great series and I can't wait for the next book!

About this author

Okay, so I'm supposed to tell you about me...
Seriously, if I wrote a book about myself it would take you 10 minutes to read and you would be bored stiff after the first 2! LOL

I'm a full-time writer, wife, and mother. Which basically means there's always a surplus of pencils lost somewhere in my hair, I usually have some place to be(I'm always late), I have a bad habit of calling family and friends random character's names (from my books), I talk to myself because no one else listens to me, and I can throw together a mean dinner for 8 with only 10 minutes notice and four ingredients in the pantry, LOL.

If you can't find me on the sidelines of my sons' football games, online, cooking, cleaning, shopping, at the local coffee joint or on the phone wandering aimlessly throughout my house then I've probably hidden myself in my "bat-cave" to write.

I have a positive attitude, and absolute fun-loving approach to life. That makes it easy for the voices in my head to take over on a regular basis providing endless hours of entertainment for my pleasure, and hopefully yours.

Random facts about me:

~My favorite color is pink
~I have a Bishon Frise puppy named Cullen Edward
~My favorite music is hip-hop
~I have a severe addiction to coffee. So much so, that those in my inner circle refuse to speak to me before caffeine O'clock! True Story

Enjoy the ride.

Review #56: Legacy of Moon and Fire: Matt Larkin

I recieved this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review.
This is the second novel by Matt Larkin that I have had the privilege of reading. This is book two in the Skyfall series and it is better than the first one if you ask me. Matt is so great at weavi a new world for you to lose yourself in.
This novel is more of Malin's story with a little of Ratna and Chandi mixed in. In the end they are tangle together and answer some questions but you are still left with mystery and speculation of what's to come. Matt has no fear of adding new characters, killing off old characters and even bringing back characters that you thought you had seen the last of. Over the course of the book some characters grow by learning from their mistakes while others end up dead from being to stubborn to take responsibility for their actions.
My new favourite character is Pohaci, a buaya jadian or in lamens terms, a were- crocodile. She stole my heart because of haw badly she had been mistreated in the beginning. Plus she is Malin's new lover. So yeah a were- tiger and a were- crocodile hooking up, no further explaination needed. Even though I really like her I have this crazy feeling that she isn't what she seems, another character mentioned something which lead me to believe this. I can't wait to find out her secrets.
Another great read curiosity of Matt Larkin. If you are into epic fantasies you should probably pick this series up. I look forward to continuing the series.

About this author

Matt was born and raised in Virginia, and graduated from the College of William and Mary there. His lifelong love of fantasy began with The Hobbit. This led him to start writing his own stories at a young age. His primary influences are mythology and history. He now lives in Florida with his wife.

But, Max--her best friend/dream guy/someday-to-be-her-husband-only-he-doesn’t-know-it-yet--hates

Courtland with a passion. Adela wants to know why, except neither boy is talking.

When Max leaves her stranded in his parents' wine cave with his worst enemy, Courtland, after what the experts are calling a “megathrust” earthquake, Adela starts to question her loyalty to Max as steamy kisses in a dark damp cellar only fuel her emotions with more conflict.

But does she really have time to worry about that when fire, destruction and mayhem surround her?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you want to state this you can, but not necessary: Allusive Aftershock is a story about a major earthquake and contains situations involving death and destruction. It is highly emotional and there is some mild sexual content because, it is after all, a romance. J
A note from Susan:
My friends and family know me as Susan Griscom, but I write the Whisper Cape series under the name of Regan Walsh. Visit my blog: http://swblog.susangriscom.com
I daydream often and sometimes my daydreams interrupt my daydreams. So I write to remember them. If I didn't write, I think my mind would explode from an overload of fantasy and weirdness. To the annoyance of my friends and family, my characters sometimes become a part of my world. During my childhood, I would frequently get in trouble in school for daydreaming. Eventually, my vivid imagination paid off and I had the privilege of writing and co-directing my sixth-grade class play—a dreadful disaster, though not from my writing, of course, I must blame it on the acting.
I enjoy writing about characters living in small quaint towns and tend to lean toward the unusual and spooky.
My paranormal playing field delves into a different milieu, abandoning vampires and werewolves, but not discounting them. Someday I might like to write a novel about vamps and those furry creatures. But for now I like the bizarre mixed with romance. A strong hero or heroine confronted with extraordinary forces of nature, powers and capabilities gets my blood running hot.
Blog Tour: Vampyre Kisses- Elizabeth J. Kolodziej
Hey everyone! I will be your host today December 22, 2012 for this Tour Stop. I am doing an author interview with the lovely Elizabeth J. Kolodziej. Here it goes!!
1). Can you explain why your book is about and what inspired you to write it?
 My book is about a young woman who doesn't realize she is a Witch. After meeting a vampire named Trent he helps her to find her path. The inspiration for this book came from my knowledge of the supernatural, imagination and own life experiences I wanted to share with the world.
2). How long did it take you to get your book written and published?
I would say a total of four years. I started the book when I was 18 and at first it was just a hobby. When I went to university for a Bachelors in English I began to become even more inspired and eventually finished the book. Then I looked at it and said what do I do with it now? lol.
3). What is your favourite part of the book and why?
Oooo. That's a tough question. I would say one of my favorite scenes is when a werewolf attacks Faith and she is forced to do magic for the first time.
4). What was the hardest part in the book to write and why?
Writing from Trent's perspective was difficult. For some it is easy to write either POV, however I had never written from a male POV and I found it difficult because men's brains work so differently from ours.
5). Who is your favourite character from Vampyre Kisses and why?
Though it's difficult I would have to say Faith (and Oran). Faith is a strong female lead that didn't just POOF learn her magic. She had to go through trial and error along with being trained. That isn't an easy task!
6). Do you have a writing routine that you follow?
Back several months ago when I didn't have a huge social life, boyfriend, holidays, and five different pieces to work on at once I would say I might of. haha. I try really hard at writing now. I have been going through a tad of writer's block and lack of time though. Somehow I am making my way through it!
7). What other authors and/ or books inspired you to become a writer!
The first author to truly inspire me was Tamora Pierce. I began my first book when I was 13/14 and got to the last chapter but never finished. She truly is a mentor to me. One I can't talk to unless I use my imagination but STILL! Other would be: R.L Stein, Christopher Moore, Kim Harrison and Jeaniene Frost.
8). How do you come up with your ideas?
Truthfully, it is different every time. The most often is when I am driving and listening to music, at the point it is like a bolt of lightning and I get an idea. Normally it is that bolt of lightning that gives me inspiration out of no where.
9). What are you working on now and can you give us any details?
At the moment I am working on book 4 for the Last Witch series. It is called Demonic Charms and will delve further into the scene that happens a chapter or two before the end of Witch Devotions. And yes, there will be demons involved. ::wink:: Also, I am trying to get the prequel short story to the Last Witch Series done. That is hush hush but I can tell you it takes place in the 40's/50's time period.
Under a pen name I am working on my Steampunk series: Zombiepunk. The first book for that is being edited right now and will involve masked heroes, zombies, a voodoo queen and characters from the band V is for Villains.
Along with several other projects I am working on.
10). What advice would you give to others pursuing writing?
Read up on marketing, PR and how to write well. Take a class even. Then decide if you are up for the task.
<3's and fangs,
Liz ^_^
Review #55: Love Evolution- Michelle Mankin
Title: Love Evolution
Author: Michelle Mankin
Pages: 278
Series: Black Cat Records
Rating: 4/5 Stars
Review: *SPOILER ALERT*
I was loaned this book by a friend and decided to read it right away because I needed a break from paranormal and wanted a light and airy read. At first the premise reminded me of She's the Man with Amanda Bynes, so I figured that it must be cute.
Avery and Justin moved away from their motherless home and abusive dad when it became too much for them to handle. They wanted to make it big in New York as a band, which is probably what would have happened if Justin hadn't gotten into drugs and ended up dead. Avery is distraught when Justin dies and had to take on his debt that he owed to the mob for drugs. Luckily for Avery, she gets an opportunity to pay off the debt, when she auditions for the new lead guitarist in the famous band Brutal Strength and impresses everyone so much that she gets the gig. But one small roadblock, the lead singer hates women in his band, so what does Avery do? She dresses up like a guy and secures the job.
Throughout the novel, we see a Avery and the lead singer Marcus learn and grow. Avery helps Marcus snap out of his depression and learn to love music again, while Marcus helps Avery get over the loss of her brother and mother. They build a very close relationship, enough to have Marcus question his sexuality. Then Avery comes clean and tells Marcus that she loves him. At first he is hurt from her lie and he hates her. Once he realizes that he loves her too they build a romantic relationship.
The were a few things that I found highly unrealistic, such as no one noticing that Avery was a girl. Didn't anyone, fans in particular google her and see that she wasn't a dude? Really people? If I cut my hair off and wrapped my boobs you would still be able to tell that I was a girl.other then that it was a great read. I would recommend it to anyone who wants a cute, fast read or anyone who's into romance.
Michelle Mankin is a young adult romance writer as well as a self proclaimed giant... inside of her own mind!
For many years she worked in the insurance industry as an underwriter. Somehow, the boredom didn't kill her but the hour and hours of looking at facts and figures provided ample time for her mind to wander.
Love Evolution is her debut novel. A rock 'n roll romance based on Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. It is the first in a planned trilogy using the plot underpinnings of Shakespeare combined with the drama, excitement, and indisputable sexiness of the rock 'n roll industry.
When she is not putting her daydreams down on paper, you can find her traveling the world with her family, sometimes for real, and sometimes just for pretend as she takes the children to school and back.
Review #54: Stream Liner of the Lost Souls- Paul Leslie Griffiths
Title: Stream Liner of the Lost Souls
Author: Paul Leslie Griffiths
Pages: 173
Rating: 3/5 Stars
Review: I received this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review.
I feel really bad about my 3/5 star review because others loved this book, I just couldn't. It wasn't my thing at all. I really felt like the summary was for another book. I thought this book would be about teens fighting to get away from gangs and drugs on the street. I was so far off its not even funny. To start off, this book was not YA, maybe it could pass as NA but I would say adult. It was very gruesome and there was a lot of fighting, shootings and stabbings. I kept forgetting the characters because I found that there were so many of them. I really had no idea what was going on until the very end of the story. All I know was if someone's eyes flashed red they were evil.
Character wise I really didn't feel a connection to any of them because like I said there were so many present. And when I finally knew who someone was they would die.
This book just plain confused me. I really don't see there being a second one, unless its a "before" and tells what what happened with Lee and Vanessa's dad. I would recommend this to people who like Sci- Fi, not those looking for a nice book about teens getting their lives straight and getting off the street like I thought.
Thanks Paul for letting me read and review your book. It just wasn't for me.
Born in the picturesque town of Evesham, Worcester in 1962
Youngest of three boys
Now live's in Swindon, Wiltshire Inspiration
I first started to write when the time in my life was at its lowest, I needed to come away from the real world and bury myself into a different world a world where I was in full control, who lived, who died, who laughed, who cried , I found that I prefer to be in a fantasy state than real life , I have not changed this thought ever since.
Author Interview and Giveaway: Christy Sloat
So as many if you know I have adopted the lovely Christy Sloat this Christmas from the Facebook event Christmas For Authors held by the amazing people over at Young Adult and Teen Readers. Christy has been so awesome and has offered to give away some swag and do an interview with me. Here it is.
1). What would I find in your refrigerator right now?
Nothing! I literally need to shop for everything. I think I have more milk than anything else. So at least my kids are set!
2). If you were a salad, what kind of dressing would you have and why?
Wow! Way to make me think. Okay I guess I would have Italian dressing because I am Italian! And I am spicy!
3). What do you do to get in the writing mood?
The house must be quiet. Kids in bed, husband either working or in bed. I need music on and goldfish crackers. If I can’t have music I can’t write. I light candles and help myself get into the calm mood of writing.
4). Sell me an invisible pen.
Ahem! You see this pen? No? Well that’s the magic of this here pen. You can’t see it! It’s magic and who doesn’t want a little magic in their lives? For only 9.99 you can own magic in your own hands. Don’t pass up this once in a lifetime opportunity!
5). Who would win a battle between and angel and a ghost?
An angel for sure! They have the most power here on Earth. A ghost is just stuck here and the angel is allowed to be here to guide humans and such. So the angel would take that ghost out!
6). What do you think of garden gnomes?
 I love them! I do not fear them like some authors I know, Stacey Rourke. I especially like the zombie ones.
7). If you were a kitchen utensil what would you be and why?
 A wooden spoon. Because I am tough and it takes a lot to break me down. You can depend on me to be there for you when you need me. I can also hurt ya if you test me!
8). If you could be on any reality TV show, which one would you be on and why?
Duck Dynasty! I love that family. They look like so much fun to be around. I want them to take me in as a family member.
9). How do you celebrate when you finally write "The End"?
I cry sometimes. Although I am usually by myself I do a little dance and pat myself on the back. One time I did a short video telling everyone I finished my book.
10). What scares you?
My hubby is a Police Officer so his job sometimes scares me. I don’t like spiders very much. I don’t like heights or airplanes. I am also scared of evil people in this world who think its okay to hurt our children or others. That’s scary.
11). What is your dirty little secret when writing?
Hmm, I usually write in my underwear! Just kidding! I write in my jammies. I need comfort.
12). If you were a Christmas decoration what would you be!
I think I would be the angel at the top! Because I am so cool!!
And now some fan questions.
13). Who is your favourite author? (Len Phelps)
I don’t have just one. I have many like: Stephenie Meyer, J.K. Rowling, Michelle Warren and the list goes on and on. But right now I have an author crush on Margaret Stohl and Kami Garcia. I just love those two!
14). What made you decide to take the leap into actually publishing your book? (Mary Myers- Huff Barscz)
I was originally going to self-publish my first book. Then I was approached by a so called publisher who eventually scammed me. Sadly.
 Anchor Group came along and saved me. It was the best decision I have ever made. I think that you have to believe in your work before you publish at all. If you don’t believe in your work no one will!
15). Why don't you like vampires? (Lisa Markson)
What!? I don’t know who spread this awful rumor, but I love Vamps! I mean I love them!!!! I like Vampire Diaries, Twilight, Anne Rice’s Vampires and more. I even wrote a short story called ‘Darkness and Danger’ in an anthology  called; ‘Paranormal days gone awry’. I would never write a novel on Vampires only because I think it’s a bit overdone.
16). What inspired you to become an author? (Eileen Gensollen)
My Grandma Theda told me I should when I was a little girl. So I have always had that want to do it. One day I decided to honor her memory and write my first book.
17). What age did you start writing? (Eileen Gensollen)
12 non- seriously and 2 years ago seriously.
18). What genre is your favourite to write, paranormal love or past lives? (Ellen Gensollen)
Paranormal is the best! I love past lives but I think I like the paranormal the course I am going to take them. There is just something awesome about that type of world!
19). Will you continue to write scary books, or go for something different? (Angie Gass Roberson)
I think I will continue the Paranormal Romance factor. There will always be a love story within my ‘scary’ novels. And they will not be too scary. Who knows where this road will take me really?
20). Do you base your characters on people around you, their characteristics and personalities? (Alicia Walker)
I have based certain characters on family and friends. A little bit though. Not totally and fully like them. I take tid bits of them and add my own take. It’s kind of like playing God a little bit. I like the thoughts of making my own person. I based Brylee off of my niece. Brylee is so much like her, shy and strong!
21). Do you ever add a trait that you wished that person had? (Alicia Walker)
Sometimes but not always.
