Blurb:
Once upon a time two lawyers fell in love across a courtroom …
Gabrielle Ginsberg was a public defender with plenty of nerve and
Braden Pierce was an assistant district attorney with a whole lot of
swagger. Gabrielle wanted Braden and Braden wanted Gabrielle.
And Cameron wanted Gabrielle.
And Marla wanted Braden.
And Cole wanted Gabrielle.
And Mrs. Mason wanted Braden.
And an anonymous letter writer wanted to keep Gabrielle and Braden apart.
Together Gabrielle and Braden discovered many important things, like
which doors at the courthouse actually locked, and that desks could be
useful for more than writing. They also found out that the path of
love was not always smooth, and it was sometimes trod upon by some
really wacky people, like a confused fanny grabber, an eighty-two year
old pothead and a gentleman who threw a wine and cheese party in his
pants. Could true love overcome a lack of privacy, interference by
jealous rivals and the insanity of the criminal court system?

Excerpt
“No deal.”
“What? What do you mean no deal?”
“Gabrielle,
the man worked the counter for eight hours with the owner tied up behind him.
It’s all on video. I would have to try really
hard to lose this case at trial.”
“You
want to waste your time trying this? What is it you think I would say to the
twelve jurors who gave up their day for that great example of the criminal
justice system in action?”
“Maybe
you could put on your “everybody has a right to a trial” defense.”
“You know, I’m going to
win with that one someday, baby. You had better watch out.”
“Look,
I won’t object to him pleading guilty.”
“With
no agreement? How kind of you! Well, at least people won’t question whether I’m
trading sexual favors for deals.”
“Wait
a minute! You never said that was on the table!” he joked.
“I may have no
other choice. He worked the freaking cash register for eight hours to get more
money! On camera! C’mon, big boy. I’ll let you cuff me for plea to unlawful
restraint with a two year cap.” I winked.
“Pack up your
stuff and come with me,” he said, shaking his head and packing up his own
files. I packed up all of my files and followed him out of the courtroom. I saw
that we were headed toward the onsite DA’s offices where prosecutors prepared
witnesses and negotiated plea bargains. We went in and he led me to an open
interview room, shutting the door behind us. I figured that he had taken pity
on me and would throw some kind of bone.
“So,
you want to discuss a deal after all?” I asked seriously.
“I’ll
think about it, but don’t expect it to be generous, and I won’t offer anything
if the victim objects.”
“Okay?”
I said, feeling a little confused. “I guess I can understand that. So why did
you want to come here?”
“Because
I want to kiss that saucy mouth.”
“Oh,”
I said, surprised, and felt goose bumps form on my arms. We were at work. This
was … different. He walked over and stood right in front of me. I could feel
heat radiating from his body and, God, he smelled good. He grabbed my chin and
tipped my head back. Then he looked intently into my eyes for a second, leaned
down, and I could feel his warm breath and sense his lips about to brush mine,
when he pulled back, teasing me. I opened my eyes again, unsure what to do and
afraid to move. I was about to start panting and a small whimper escaped my
throat.
It
seemed to fire him up and his mouth came down on mine hard and took total
possession of it. So far he had been a slow, sensuous kisser but today he was
more greedy and demanding, almost dominating, and I’m not ashamed to tell you
that I liked it! He reached inside my suit jacket and ran his fingers lightly
along my back, sending shivers up and down my spine and I felt my lower regions
heating up and liquefying. After melting my panties for a few minutes he pulled
back.
“I
have a confession. I tend to get a lot of adrenaline flowing in court,” he said
in a husky voice. “When I’m in court with you, I also tend to get a lot of
testosterone flowing. The combination fires up my libido like you wouldn’t
believe.”
“I
should argue with you more often,” I replied a little breathlessly.
“You
argue with me all the time. We’re lawyers. And you’ve been driving me crazy for
quite a while now. If we hadn’t started dating I probably would have banged
half the women in this courthouse.”
“I
thought that you had banged half the women in this courthouse.”
“Okay,
the other half.”
“You
know, I think I’m happy that I’m a lawyer. And, believe me, I don’t say that a
lot.”
“Nobody says
that a lot. I really need to have some hot sweaty monkey sex with you on
Friday. And when I say “some” I mean hours’ worth. I’m talking getting
seriously freaky until we pass out.”
“That’s
the best offer you’ve made me all day. You know that if I wind up trying this
dumbass case, I’m going to make you use that adrenaline and testosterone to
service me all night.”
“Well then,
we’ll definitely need to sleep in the next day. Now I have to get out of here
before I hit the floor … with you
under me.”
Author Bio:
Once upon a time ... N.M. Silber was a criminal defense attorney who
got up each morning, donned her power suit and sensible pumps, downed
a gallon of coffee and set out to "fight the good fight" while trying
to not go insane. Having a dark sense of humor and a sarcastic wit
helped -- a lot. Another thing that helped was reading. As escapism
was the goal, she liked to read romance novels, especially really
funny ones and really sexy ones. Then one day something beautiful
happened -- she read one that was both funny and sexy at the same
time. She hung up her power suit, put away her sensible pumps and
moved her coffee mug to her computer. Now she writes funny and sexy
romance novels herself and she lives happily ever after.

I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review, and I think I am about as frustrated after reading this ARC as I have ever been. I stayed up half the night to finish this book because it, quite frankly, would not let me put it down. Did I mention I’m frustrated? Extremely Frustrated! Is there a stronger word than “frustrated?” Why, you may ask? Because the book isn’t being released for three more days, I cannot share my copy with anyone, and I have NO ONE to talk to about it. Frustrated, I tell you! {shakes fists in the air}
Literally from the opening scene I knew I was in for a treat. This book grabbed me immediately and virtually dared me to try to put my Kindle down. In fact, I did try. As the evening turned into the wee hours of the morning, I tried to convince myself that I should get some sleep. Not happening! I couldn’t do it. I rode it out to the final chuckle. It didn’t matter that I would have to function the next day on four hours of sleep. I would not, could not put it down.
Author N.M. Silber has created characters that rival some of the best television and movie comedy ensembles I’ve ever seen. If you thought Lucy and Ethel were capable of getting into predicaments, you haven’t met Gabrielle and Jess. I can’t help thinking that the “Friends” ensemble nearly pales in comparison to what Ms. Silber has created here. In fact, if someone somewhere doesn’t pick this up and run with it as a premise for a TV sit-com or romantic comedy movie, then there’s no justice in the world. My biggest challenge in writing this review is finding enough different words to use in place of “funny.”
The banter between the characters – all of the characters – is laugh-out-loud hilarious. The courtroom scenes are unpredictable and witty. The flirty scenes between Braden and Gabrielle are outrageous, but in a sexy, playful way. Even the supporting characters get in on the madness. Gabrielle tries to warn Braden that, aside from her parents, her other relatives are crazy. Well, crazy doesn’t quite cover it really. When Gabrielle’s, “thirty-two-year-old cougar cousin with the big hair, the expensive manicure and the Jimmy Choos,” loudly inquires of Gabrielle if Braden is “built to scale,” I figured we had seen the evidence of crazy. Wrong! It wasn’t until her mother had to shut down a dinner table discussion from Gabrielle’s Bubbe (grandmother) about the merits of “oral attention,” that I realized this family pushes crazy beyond the pale. Oh, and trust me, Braden’s family is equally capable of dishing out their own style of irony.
It is NO exaggeration to say that every single scene in this book for me was perfection. In addition to the outrageous banter between the characters, author N.M. Silber also manages to give the reader an equally pleasing dose of warm and tender romance, and some fulfilling hot and heavy passion as well. I enjoyed this book too much to even dare try to mention plot for fear of spoiling anything for the reader.
Between the characters’ banter, the preposterous “fixes” that Gabrielle manages to coax her best friend Jess into, and the underlying theme of a blossoming romance that I was completely and utterly pulling for, my verdict is that there is clear and convincing evidence that The Law of Attraction is THE stand-out romantic comedy of 2013! I cannot wait for the sequel!
I LOVED this book. Hardcore, super duper, would recommend it to anyone, marking it as a favorite kind of love. It's cute, adorable, lovely, sexy, panty-melting, heart-warming, laugh-out-loud goodness. The Law of Attraction is the first of a two-part series that will turn into standalone books about the other introduced characters. Like Stefan says, there's something for everyone; funny banter mixed with hot, sexy build-up mixed with hilarious side characters round out the likability of the book. I can't wait for the second book just because I want to spend more time with Gabrielle and Braden and the humping game. A HUGE must-read!
I always know when a book is good when I finish the book and immediately scour the internet to cyberstalk the writer to find out everything I can about what he or she is writing next, when it will be published, and what else he or she has released. I definitely cyberstalked the heck out of N.M. Silber after finishing this book.
This novel has a great mix of humor, plot, and sexiness. The funny dialogue between Gabrielle and Braden had me smiling and snorting with laughter throughout the read--I love a funny, sexy read. The sexiness was in perfect tune with the book--not too salacious but not too tame either. And the mix of romance between Gabrielle and Braden and the 'who is behind these threatening notes' plot kept me turning pages until my eyes were burning and begging for sleep in the wee hours of the morning..but I just couldn't stop. I willingly lost sleep--on a work night!-- so that I could see how this story ended.
You know why we liked them so much? Communi-freaking-cation. They're lawyers, so no offense to other lawyers out there, but these two liked to argue. The best part about their negotiations and banter and back and forth is that it was easy and happy and funny..so not your typical start of a relationship. Maybe the lack of angst was due to their age and chosen professions, but it was awesome and hysterical and I completely loved it. I laughed out loud many times, but I really enjoyed some of their court cases together. He is the prosecutor and she is the court appointed attorney for mostly minor cases but her inner-Gabrielle dialogue made me almost choke on my drink a few times. So be warned. Hopefully you laugh your ass off, but don't drink and read as it could be hazardous.
You can imagine my surprise when I got to the last page and I saw that this story would be continued in a second book. Those of you who read the blog on a regular basis know that I have a love/hate relationship with the whole 'to be continued' or even worse cliffhangers...but N.M. Silber handled the ending so well that I honestly was okay with having to wait for the next one to come out. I had a nice feeling of satisfaction and while I definitely will be eager to get my hands on the next book, I didn't have a strong desire to strangle the author...more like I wanted to gently nudge her into releasing the next one as quickly as possible.
Yep, I was a little like "say what?" But it wasn't a cliff hanger per se for Gabrielle and Braden. I loved them both with abandon, but it is more the secondary plot that is to be continued I think, while still giving us more of our favorite little gang. I can't wait to see what shenanigans they get up to in the court room, and well the interview rooms *ahem*. I can't wait to see what comes out of her Bubbe's (her grandma) mouth next and would love to see a scene where Bubbe and Drew (Braden's brother) go toe to toe, because that would be funny. *hint, hint*! Anyways, does my review make it seem like I am so happy to have read this book and really, really, really loved it? Well I'd like to state for the record (see, I even learned some court proceedings, lol) that I am currently smiling. It made me very happy.
I'm so looking forward to seeing who this mysterious note writer is, reading the funny quips between Gabrielle and Braden and their friends, and hopefully see them have their happily ever after. These two had one of the sweetest, non-angst filled romances I've read in a while and I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Me too, sister. Me. Too! I can't wait to see what happens next! Some of my favorite books are happy, well-written ones like this that pull me out of my angst filled masochistic book hangover. This is one of those. Perfect.
